ULSTER COUNTY DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MAKES CANDIDATE ENDORSEMENTS
NEWS RELEASE
June 9, 2009

At their June 8 nominating convention, the Ulster County Democratic Committee endorsed candidates for Ulster County Judge, Ulster County Clerk and Legislative races.

In the local Legislature race, Democrats selected two term incumbent legislator Gary Bischoff as well as newcomers, Marcy Goulart, Alverta Jones and Nicole Tucker.

Saugerties Democratic committee chair Mike Harkavy said, “Gary Bischoff has proven to be a leader committed to good government. Bischoff showed his leadership by getting Ulster County voters to approve the Charter and then led the transition to the County Executive form of government. In the legislature, Bischoff is the chair of the Laws and Rules Committee and is a member of the Economic Development Committee and Environmental Committee. Bischoff also served on the Saugerties Town Board, and was instrumental in creating four town budgets with no tax increases, so we know how concerned he is about our taxes. We are pleased that he is running again.”

Harkavy went on to say, “Nicole Tucker is highly motivated and immediately impresses you with her quiet confidence and her enthusiasm for the political process as a vehicle for serving her community. Nicole is a role model for those who grew up in Saugerties, left to get their higher education, and choose to return to live and work in the town they love. . As a Social Studies teacher at Saugerties High School she is beloved and respected by her students. She strives to have her students understand their role in democracy and the responsibilities of leadership. By bringing her students to the inauguration of Barack Obama she gave them a once in a lifetime gift that will motivate them for the rest of their lives.”

Alverta Jones has had a varied career and education. Harkavy noted, “I’ve observed Alverta at several community events, and I’m impressed with her eagerness to learn and to serve the community. Alverta grew up as a ministers daughter, raised five children, and is a grandmother of ten. She has had a wide variety of life experiences and a secondary education with a major in political science that I truly believe has uniquely positioned her to become a very effective legislator. She learns quickly and has shown a tremendous willingness to pitch in to work for the community. In her own words, Life and education have prepared me for this position of trust and integrity.”

Harkavy added, “Marcy Goulart is a straight shooter. That quality is crucial for good government. She has years of experience in the hospitality industry and real estate, which will be critical for the growth, and expansion of the tourism industry in our county. The tourism industry is one of our greatest sources of revenue and it would be wonderful having a person or Marcy’s caliber helping to develop this asset even more. Marcy is currently the chair of the Leadership Development Committee for the Ulster County Democratic Women as well as a board member fir the Salvation Army, the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Heart Association.”

Harkavy noted, “This is a slate of Ulster County Legislature candidates that we can all be proud of. Voters can confidently pull the lever for the entire slate and know that they will be represented by four people that will work hard for all of us in Ulster County.”
